The Network: Google VS youtube-mp3.org

The Network will be a stop to hear about all the online news.  Facebook, Google, and Reddit are just some of the sites we might discuss.  Never be an internet noob again!  Stay in the know with The Network!

Google is suing a 21 year old German student named Philip Matesanz who created the website youtube-mp3.org. If you didn't know, Google owns YouTube and according to Google, a website like that is against YouTube's terms of service.

youtube-mp3.org is a site where you can put a link to a youtube video and it will convert it into an mp3.

Google sent Matesanz a cease-and-desist last month. The site is still up but it does not work as it used to. Matesanz presented the case to two German experts, and both of them produced statements defending Matesanz and his cause.

Matesanz compared what he does to something like if you were to record on a cassette tape, a live broadcast. It's a public broadcast that you turn into a private copy. But with this YouTube loses the money from advertisers that they would be getting if you were to watch the video on the website.

Matesanz also created a petition against Google and it has gotten more than 800,000 signatures in 2 weeks. If you would like to sign the petition you can click here to do so.

This is a big corporation against the little guy dispute. But people have very clever ways of combating corporations when it comes to things like this. If the people want something like this, they will get it. It doesn't matter if Philip's site is shut down because there is literally thousands of things like it on the web. You probably will conduct a Google search to find it too. Corporations are very big, but very little compared to what people want.
