Game Grenade: The OUYA

Game Grenade is where you can hear about everything game related: reviews, tutorials, news, fan-fiction, and just plain fun.  Here we'll be covering today's best sellers as well as decade old classics.

The OUYA is a new game console that is going to attempt to rein in the gaming industry back on the the TV, but also remain inexpensive like the console's opponent, tablets and smartphones. This console will be powered by Android and like icing on the cake, all games will be free to try.

PC World said, "Is the $99 OUYA the Video Game Console for the 99 Percent?"

The OUYA's other big kick is that they are trying to help the simple game developer. Anyone can create a game and put it on the OUYA. This makes a lot of sense considering that it would cost about 20 million, to 100 million dollars to create a major AAA game. On the OUYA they are taking out all those fees like publishing, retail, and licensing. The only thing game developers have to worry about is making some of the game free. Then they can ask for a subscription, in-game enhancements, or a full-game upgrade.

The OUYA started a kickstarter which is basically where the users can back the project by donating money so it can happen. Depending on how much money you donate you receive different "prizes". For example if you donate $99 dollars or more you will get an OUYA. They started the kickstarter with a goal of 950,000 dollars. As of blogging they have $4,556,807. That is crazy.

This just goes to show you how passionate the gaming community is. People really want to see gaming come to life on the TV again. And people really want to see the world NOT taken over by corporations and give the small game developer a chance. On their kickstarter they said,

"There's something about a big HD TV and digital surround sound that fills up a living room. Shooters, platformers, sports games, arcade classics and experimental indie games just feel bigger on a TV screen. It's how most of us grew up gaming."

Is the world of tablet and smartphone gaming coming to an end? No. Is the world of "big league" gaming like Xbox and PS3 coming to an end? No. But this is one step closer to a multi-platform gaming experience where the user can choose how they want to game. It's not about any gaming platform coming to an end. It's about them all being revolutionized by each other and them all coming together to get to this multi-platform you-choose-how-to-game experience. Choose your own adventure, if you will. And when these companies realize that that's what the users want, then we will really have an awesome gaming adventure.

In the meantime, if you would like to learn more information about the OUYA or if you would like to donate, you can go to their kickstarter by clicking here.
