Gears and Gadgets: WHEN HIGGS FLY!

Technology is always evolving, and sometimes it's hard to keep up. Here at Gears and Gadgets, we'll discuss all the latest innovations in technology and science, and will give you links to people who know even more about the subject!

You may have heard, or you may have not heard but the last part in figuring out why everything is the way it is in the universe was found in the past weeks. You may want to know why everything is the way it is in the universe. It's basically the meaning of life.

So, it may not be the meaning of life but it is in fact one step closer to figuring out why and how we got here in a science standpoint. On July 4th scientists at CERN have claimed to have found the missing puzzle piece in our universe. "The God Particle" or the Higgs particle. Remember that super collider that was a big deal about a year ago? Yeah, that thing is a really big deal in this. That super collider was going to smash particles together to see if somehow, they create new particles, disproving Einstein's theory that you cannot create, nor destroy matter. In the process of smashing things into each other scientists believe that they have discovered the Higgs boson.

There are four forces in the universe.

  • Gravitation
  • Electromagnetic
  • Strong
  • Weak

And each one of those forces is said to have a "boson" and the boson is the actual force that carries these 4 forces.

Now that you have some of that information let's figure out what the Higgs boson is. Why does your dog have more mass than a paperclip? Because he's a dog? Not really. It's because of the Higgs field. Right now in this whole discovery scientists are saying that the Higgs field spans across the entire universe and certain particles are affected by it in different ways. So a particles in paperclips do not have an extreme mass because the particles in them are not affected as highly as particles in say, a dog. But every field has to have a boson to carry that force and that is where the Higgs boson comes in. Ladies and gentlemen, you have just unlocked the key to the universe.

Now remember, that this is very preliminary, but it's so amazing how this one piece of information that we have been working so hard to reach for so long is literally rewriting textbooks. It was one piece of the puzzle that was stuck in a couch cushion and we finally found it. This is going to change the way we think about everything.

Here are some videos and articles to help explain further because I know I have probably missed some things or didn't say things quite the way I wanted to.
