The Network: The Internet Association

The Network will be a stop to hear about all the online news. Facebook, Google, and Reddit are just some of the sites we might discuss. Never be an internet noob again! Stay in the know with The Network!

Facebook, Google, Amazon, and Ebay have just teamed up to create what is known as the "Internet Association." On their website they state they are trying to keep a free, public internet. Interesting.

The organization is planned to be lead by Michael Beckerman, the Senior Capital Hill Advisor. He states that the internet needs a voice in Washington which I agree with, whole-heartedly. But before we go throwing money at anybody, I think we should examine the possibility of this just being some corporation scam to get u to rally our forces. Because we are the most powerful thing on the internet. We are the internet.

It would be hard to look at history considering we have to look at 4 different companies who are not associated with each other. And the Internet Association has no track record. Google has been known to rally forces to many things, and they are radical about the statements they make. They are pretty much invincible though, considering over 4 billion searches are conducted everyday. A couple were made searching this story!

It is true that Google is powerful, and they have rallied for a free internet in the past with things like SOPA. And they have always actively opposed censorship.

Facebook is a little bit of a different story. I always feel like censorship is a bit taboo for facebook. Because there are millions of posts, pictures, etc scattered around the site that probably shouldn't be there. And with new software that spies on chats and posts, it just seems like maybe they are trying to redeem themselves a bit.

I'm probably being a bit too harsh, especially because these 4 companies have never worked together.

I've never seen nor heard anything from ebay or Amazon. So we can't really think about that.

You have to think of the possibility that this is like any other company move. On their website they make a very interesting statement about the "global community of users" that all of these companies have. They do understand that we have power, but they don't understand that their interests aren't always ours interests.

But I do think the internet should be represented on a much grander stage. We are one of the most powerful communities in the entire world, because we have the entire world on our sides. The internet is not about e-mails, and dial-up anymore. It is about this global connection, and the information that we are able to transfer because of that.

There are people who care a lot about this place, including me, and I surely wouldn't be afraid to fight. It's simply the freedom of speech. It's simply the freedom to be who you are. And have an army of people waiting to back you up.

People try to censor things for their own gain all the time, but an army which is stronger, will not be censored.

Do you think these companies will really try to protect the internet? Please tell me your thoughts in the comments below. And feel free to check out my personal blog in the side bar! Thank you so much!
